KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - An old scam is finding victims in a new way on the Big Island. Police are alerting people who use Craigslist to use caution.
A woman from Kealakekua says she was selling furniture on the popular website, when someone claiming to be a disabled woman on the mainland agreed to buy it. The buyer, through e-mail, said she would purchase the furniture for $230, but would need to send a check for $2,452 to the Big Island. She asked the woman to deposit the check, subtract the $230 for the furniture, then send the balance to Western Union.
After she sent the check, the 29-year-old Kealakekua woman found, the original check was a fake. The case is being investigated as a theft.
